5 Ways to Stay Focused Behind the Wheel At Work And At Home

From construction projects to communing, driving is an essential part of our everyday lives. Unfortunately, they make up roughly one-quarter to one-third of workplace accidents. Being distracted for a few seconds is all it takes for someone to experience a life-changing incident like this. At Above All Storefronts, safety is our top priority, so we’re committed to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving on and off the job.

Why Distracted Driving Is A Serious Safety Issue

Distracted driving may not seem that serious to some drivers, but these instances cause thousands of collisions. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving was the main cause of over 3,000 fatalities and 400,000 injuries in 2024 alone.

For this reason, it’s important to understand that distracted driving is only a simple mistake. It’s a dangerous habit that costs lives.

5 Tips To Stay Focused On The Road

If you want to stay safe while driving, here are a few practical tips to avoid distractions:

Plan Before You Drive

Don’t wait until you’re on the road to start planning your route. Looking at your phone, even if it’s for a second, could lead to a serious accident. Always prepare your Google Maps, music, or anything else before you leave. If it’s an emergency and you need to adjust something, pull over to the side of the road or a parking lot.

Avoid Using Your Phone

Having your phone out is the easiest way to lose focus. When driving, leave your phone in your pocket or put it in your glove box to avoid being tempted. If you need to for any reason, stop and park somewhere safe before you use it.

Keep Passengers Under Control

Driving with passengers isn’t a problem in itself. However, having too many or getting distracted because of them can be dangerous. If traveling with more passengers, find ways to keep them engaged while focusing on the road ahead. You may also want to limit the number of people on board to minimize distractions.

Secure Any Cargo

There are a few cases where a driver’s cargo can fall off and create a safety hazard for other drivers. If you’re driving a vehicle with any supplies, ensure everything is safely secured before starting your route. A few extra precautions will give you peace of mind and prevent a potentially dangerous situation from happening.

Get Enough Rest

Driving with less than seven hours of sleep doubles the chance of a car crash. Sleep deprivation also slows down reflection times, which makes it harder to react to any changes on the road. Always aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to ensure you can drive properly.
