Safety First: Band Saw Safety While Cutting Metal

If there is one thing that our dedicated team of over 200 employees is committed to, it’s ensuring that safety is given top priority, no matter the size of the job. When Above All Store Fronts started providing top-tier architectural glazing and clodding services over 30 years ago, we took the safety of our workers seriously and continue to do so today. We also meticulously maintain all of the equipment we work with, especially since technology continues to evolve and in turn the complexity of the tools we use. We have a safety coordinator assigned to each project whose responsibility it is to comprehensively analyze all project details and specifications, including the type of equipment to be used.

“Safety Is the Priority | Quality Is the Standard”

While there is a variety of equipment that can pose safety hazards, a band saw is one that can quickly cause harm if the proper precautions are not taken every time. Below are just some of the steps that we have incorporated into our formal Accident Prevention Program regarding the use of this dangerous piece of equipment. Workers are expected to follow this checklist when using a band saw and are not allowed to operate it without having first received the proper training.

Worker Wear

Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be put on before even going near the saw

  • Protective Googles
  • Secure or remove loose clothing, jewelry or gloves
  • Wear close-toe shoes or even steel toe work boots

Equipment Use

  • Have a specific plan in place detailing the work to be done
  • Make sure the saw is off before starting work
  • Use the correct blade
  • If the saw becomes jammed, never try to force it
  • Don’t try to remove scraps while the blade is still going
  • Use a push stick for small workpieces or narrow stock
