Project Spotlights: Chick-Fil-A at Smith Street (Downtown Brooklyn)

We’re always proud of our projects, but especially so when they provide an immediate impact on the surrounding community. On July 24, 2025, a new Chick-fil-A® restaurant began serving its guests in downtown Brooklyn, NY and more importantly, brought approximately 75 new jobs to the community. Our expert team always works together to ensure the success of every project and this was no exception. Above All Store Fronts is often tapped for impactful projects in the greater New York area since we have provided top-tier architectural glazing and cladding services since 1993.

PROJECT DETAILS USED TO BEST SERVE THIS CITY RESTAURANT LOCATION

1600 6” Curtain Wall

For this project it was important that we use the Kawneer 1600 6” curtain wall system for a variety of reasons. This commercial grade curtain wall helps to achieve the desired architectural look (in this case sleek and modern glass facades), but also for meeting strict local building codes and performance for a restaurant serving a steady stream of customers in a public space.

What is a curtain wall system? Curtain wall systems are non-structural systems for the external walls of buildings. As a global leader in curtain wall system manufacturing, Kawneer engineers a comprehensive range of curtain wall systems available in traditional stick fabrication and unitized options.

  • Features
    2-1/2″ (63.5mm) sightline
  • 6″ (152.4mm), 7-1/2″ (190.5mm) or 10-1/2″ (267mm) depth
    Thermal performance
  • Seismic (AAMA 501.4 and 501.6 standards)
  • Low- to mid-rise applications
  • Blast mitigation, hurricane resistance

Exterior Thermal Doors

To complete the welcoming look of the restaurant we used exterior thermal doors for a number of reasons. The New York area experiences a full range of weather from blistering heat to freezing winters, so for this project we wanted doors that offered excellent energy efficiency, durability and superior performance. Exterior thermal doors also provide durability and most importantly for a city location, security.

Interior Framing with Standard Doors

For aesthetic purposes, it was important that this building blend in with the surrounding cityscape, yet stand out and attract customers. We used interior framing with standard doors where it’s key to create a rough opening that is about two inches wider and two to two and a half inches taller than the actual door slab to allow for the door frame, shims and proper use. To secure these we used a variety of studs which included jack studs, king studs and even cripple studs to properly secure the framing.

Transaction Window with Quickserv Window

This Chick-fil-A happens to be located on a busy corner, so it was important that customers could be served quickly and efficiently while provided with a safe place to wait for their order that did not interfere with sidewalk foot traffic. A transaction window from Quikserv is a security-focused service window designed for businesses like banks, restaurants, and pharmacies to facilitate customer interactions safely. These windows are available in various configurations, such as sliding, bi-fold, and vertical pass-thru, and can be customized with options like bullet-resistant glass, drawers, and secure locking systems.

Features
Security: High-security features are a primary focus, including bullet-resistant glass, stainless steel frames, and secure locks to protect employees from theft and threats.
Functionality: Windows can be equipped with features to enhance service, such as integrated deal trays or drawers for passing items and paperwork.

Sunshades

Sun shades are devices designed to block or filter sunlight, protecting from heat and UV rays. They were especially needed since this Chick-fil-A location has large windows covering more than one side of the building. Sunshades come in various forms, and in this case were used to help lower interior temperatures, reduce glare, and protect surfaces like upholstery, and flooring from sun damage.
