A new entrance now greets visitors to Green-Wood Cemetery, a historic 478-acre landmark celebrated as one of the world’s most beautiful cemeteries. The Green-House at Green-Wood, a new education and welcome center, officially opened in June 2025.
Designed by Architecture Research Office, the 20,000-square-foot facility enables Green-Wood to expand its year-round cultural and educational programming.
The structure features flexible spaces for gathering, exhibitions, education, and staff work, reinforcing Green-Wood’s role as a community hub while enhancing the cultural flavor of the local area. The landscaping features rolling hills, valleys, glacial ponds, and winding paths.
Green-Wood is home to one of the nation’s largest outdoor collections of 19th- and 20th-century statuary and mausoleums. Directly across from the main entrance stands the historic Weir Greenhouse, originally built in 1880 and expanded in 1895.

Project Details
The Green-House facade features an aluminum curtain wall screened with glazed terracotta baguettes and a glazed terracotta rainscreen. This material palette reflects the character and historic integrity of the cemetery while supporting the project’s goal of achieving LEED Gold certification.
This certification empowers architects, developers, engineers, and facility managers to build smarter, reduce environmental impacts, comply with local and global regulations, and enhance the well-being of occupants.
Project elements include the Kawneer Clearwall SSI System, 451UT system, terracotta panels and baguettes, acoustic equipment screens, louvers, and 3/16-inch aluminum plate panels.
Why Use Terracotta
Terracotta has several benefits, including sustainability, durability, corrosion resistance, soundproofing qualities, and fire resistance. The material is commonly used for roofing tiles, brick walls and facades, walkways and patios, decorative elements and ornamental details, planters, and insulation to regulate indoor temperatures. Environmentally friendly and proven over time, terracotta has been trusted by civilizations worldwide for over 10,000 years for its exceptional performance and longevity.
Terracotta panels are architectural elements made from fired clay, known for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Baguettes are narrow, elongated terracotta pieces often used for decorative purposes or as part of a facade system. Both are commonly used in building facades, interior walls, and landscaping. A glazed terracotta rainscreen is a building facade system designed to protect against water infiltration.
