Safety Topic – Band Saw Safety

As technology advances, so does the capability of many tools used in the construction industry. No matter how diligently you train your team or how many precautions you put into place, the need for vigilance should never be underestimated when it comes to using a band saw.

At Above All Store Fronts, maintaining the safety of our workers is a continual focus for us. Whether it’s conducting weekly Toolbox Talks to reinforce safe work habits, maintaining an active accident prevention program or conducting project-specific safety reviews, safety is and always has been a top priority.

Checklists Can Make a Difference

While many pieces of equipment can cause serious damage if not used properly, a band saw can quickly cause serious injury if the proper precautions are not taken each time it is used. A successful part of our Accident Prevention Program has been the incorporation of equipment specific safety lists. Below is the checklist we recommend that workers follow:

Worker Wear

Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be put on before even going near the saw
Protective Googles
Secure or remove loose clothing, jewelry or gloves
Wear close-toe shoes or even steel toe workboots

Equipment Use

Meticulously review the work to be done
Make sure the saw is off before starting work
Use the correct blade
If the saw becomes jammed, never try to force it
Don’t try to remove scraps while the blade is still going
Use a push stick for small workpieces or narrow stock
