Latest Innovative Glazing Technology

Advancements in glass technologies are making a big impact on glazing options. Some cool innovations are hitting the marketplace. Here are some future trends to expect.

Solar Panels

NEWEST GLAZING TECHNOLOGY

Smart Glass

Also known as switchable glass, this material can change its light transmission when an electric current is applied. Smart glass offers energy efficiency, privacy, aesthetics and comfort. Smart glass is used in windows, doors and skylights.

Lightweight Glass

New manufacturing processes and materials are expected to be developed that will create ultra-thin, lightweight glass. This trend will have a big impact on future architectural design, construction and engineering.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Research into effective self-cleaning solutions for windows is continuing, but we’re not quite there yet. Cleaning windows in high-rise buildings is expensive and challenging. Self-cleaning glass has a special coating on it that reacts with sunlight to break down organic dirt, while rainwater washes the grime away.

Solar Windows

Another area of research to keep an eye on is solar-harvesting glass. Similar to solar panels, the idea is to collect solar energy from glass. The technology, however, still needs work. Solar-panel windows obtain only a fraction of the energy that traditional solar panels do.

Bird Friendly Glass

More improvements are also expected in bird safe glass, which is designed to prevent birds from running into clear surfaces and getting injured or killed. This type of glass has a pattern or design on the exterior that deters bird strikes.

What’s Next

Future innovations in glazing will also reflect the need for improved energy efficiency, while keeping aesthetics intact. Goals to enhance security are also expected to be met. New materials are being developed to resist forced entry, fire damage, and natural disasters.
