Glazing not only adds aesthetic value to a structure but also has safety benefits, especially in a fire. Fire-rated glass has evolved from the traditional wire mesh look to a refreshing, modern style. Designers can now transform areas that need fire protection into bright, welcoming spaces.

Types of Fire-Rated Glass
Standard window glass typically breaks at around 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Modern fire-rated glass can survive temperatures higher than 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. The fire rating for glass indicates the amount of time the material can withstand flames. There are two types of fire-rated glass on the market.
Fire-protective glass
This type of glass is designed to stop smoke and flames from spreading, but doesn’t prevent the transmission of radiant heat. As a result, fire-protective glass cannot cover more than 25% of a wall.
Fire-resistant glass
This material keeps dangerous levels of radiant heat from transferring through glass and protects against spontaneous combustion. Fire-resistive glass is often used in stairwells and exit corridors.
Modern Fire-Rated Glazing Systems
Here are a few popular fire-rated glazing systems used in construction today.
Insulating Glass Units
These units provide outstanding fire protection. The benefits of modern IGU’s include temperature control, soundproofing and the ability to enhance natural daylight.
Glass Ceramics
Glass ceramics resists high heat levels. It is perfect for glass cooktops and fireplace doors. The material can be used in glazing systems with fire ratings of up to three hours.
Intumescent Glass
This is laminated glass made up of several alternating layers of glass and clear intumescent sheets. When exposed to fire, the outer layer of glass shatters, but the intumescent layers expand to create a protective barrier.
Fire-Rated Framing Systems
This assembly prevents fire-rated glass and frames from separating or failing during a fire. The two have the same fire rating, a critical safeguard in case of an emergency.
